Starting with the Western expansion and the Civil War, the three volumes of the past generations take up right up to the year 2015. The ancestors of the Oberllyn clan start out under siege; first from an unscrupulous man with an eye for a good farm to the long road west by wagon train to escape the Civil war only to become entangled in the San Francisco rebellion.
