🧱 Building LOVE & Brilliant Teams: A Lego Lesson for Hiring ❤️

Hi there ,
Reading time: about a min and 48 seconds
This week, I had a truly enjoyable task: putting together my 50th birthday gift from my son – the Lego version of Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE artwork sculpture.
If you're unfamiliar, it's that striking, stacked arrangement of the letters L-O-V-E, often in vibrant colours (I've put a pic of my Lego below for you - you're welcome!)
As I carefully snapped each little brick into place, following the instructions step by step, it struck me how much the process mirrored what it takes to build a truly brilliant company through hiring.
Think about it.
Each Lego brick, in itself, might seem small and insignificant. But when connected precisely, according to a clear design, they come together to form something meaningful and impactful – a recognisable work of art.
Hiring for brilliant companies is much the same.
Each individual you bring onto your team is like a unique Lego brick.
They possess specific skills, experiences, and perspectives.
The key is to:
- Have a clear blueprint: Understand your company's vision, values, and the specific roles you need to fill. This is your artwork design.
- Value each individual piece: Recognise the unique contribution every potential hire can bring. Don't just look for generic blocks; seek out those with the specific shapes and colours you need.
- Connect them purposefully: Ensure that each new hire not only has the right skills but also aligns with your company culture and can connect effectively with the existing team. The right connections create a strong structure.
- Follow a thoughtful process: Just like the Lego instructions (which can now be followed via a brilliant app with 3D control), a well-defined hiring process ensures you're building systematically and not just throwing pieces together.
- Create something impactful: The end result of careful, thoughtful hiring is a brilliant team that can achieve great things, just like the powerful message of the LOVE sculpture.
Building a thriving company isn't about finding one superstar; it's about carefully assembling a diverse and interconnected team where each individual piece contributes to the overall strength and beauty of the whole.
My Lego LOVE project was a wonderful reminder of that fundamental principle.
Happy Hiring!
Helen
