Aug 14, 2022 8:16 am
Howdy, !
It's currently 2:40am on the Sunday and I'm too wired with adrenaline to sleep even though I'm super tired. Long story for a bit later in this email. Hopefully, you're not having this level of scare factor that's got you up at night. But have you been up to anything exciting? Let me know!
Before I go on, a shameless request! Could you forward this newsletter to just 3 people that you think would like one of the articles? It helps A LOT! If you're the friend reading this, click the link below to join! Glad to have you here!
In this week's email...
- Week in the Life - read on the blog
- Creative Update - 6 free PC apps to make your life even easier
- Gadget - Inkbird Sous vide
- Read - The Almanac of Naval Ravikant
- Watch - The Sandman
- Quote - “Desire is a contract that you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want.”
Week in the life
Before I forget, I wanted to thank Claire, one of the readers for sharing her experience after attending a cool multi-sensory experience in Melbourne called Seance. She went a while ago and there's 3 different experiences. Here's Claire in her own words...
Something random and different. I’m a scarey cat and coped and Wills 12 not 13 and was fine! I’ve been watching Stranger Things which is super out of character for me usually I don’t watch scarey stuff like that but I’m hooked and it’s sort of a bit in that theme kind of!!
If you've found something random or cool, please feel free to share!
Now I'm trying out a different approach to this section and the first segment is available over on the blog...
Creative update
randInt S02E14 - Seeing Things on Tesla-ventures
We're a bit late with the latest randInt podcast due to unforeseen travel and other commitments clashing with literally every time slot we had pencilled in for the podcast!
We got there in the end though and this random conversation ensued...
Gadgets/Tech
This is a bit to include in this section, but I have been cooking at home a bit recently. I'm on a mission to cut most essential activities to around 20mins (be it exercise or cooking) so that I can't really make an excuse NOT to do it.
How does it tie in with spices? Well it turns out, if you have some good quality spices lying around, it's super easy to cook something simple up that tastes delicious! This range is one of the best I've found.
Other gadgets/tech
- 30 min hourglass - I'm all about the visual passage of time and I'm using this one right now to not procrastinate from writing this email!
- RODE Wireless Mic Go II - This one's more for the creators but we noticed a significant increase in audio quality after changing over to these for the podcast and other content

Endling is a game that is not afraid to hurt you
Ok, this is a bit of an odd link to read, even for me. It's an article that's part review and part commentary on a video game that I've never played nor am I likely to.
The thing that I found really fascinating is how the collective consciousness of humanity recognises that as a species we might be in trouble. And that feeling of dread is seeping into everything including things that were originally used for escapism, like video games...
Book I'm currently reading
- Build a second brain - I realised I'm back in a non-fiction phase and thought I'd start on this one after seeing some summary videos on it...
Watch
Well, watching this has added a new thing to my bucket list! This is a short stretch of road on the Hungarian Highway network and it's...unique.
Part of the reason I enjoy travelling so much is finding these little oddities around everywhere. Have you seen something a bit "different" in your travels? Care to share?
Quote I'm pondering
“Forty hour work weeks are a relic of the Industrial Age. Knowledge workers function like athletes — train and sprint, then rest and reassess.”
– Naval Ravikant
Another Naval quote since I re-finished listening to The Almanac of Naval recently. I don't entirely agree with this statement since for a decent number of things to function as they do these days, you do need people synchronising their schedules, particularly for complex things. Maybe it's my coloured view point being in healthcare, but I also can't see team sports, restaurants and many everyday work places catching up to the "knowledge work" paradigm anytime soon.
That said, what this made wonder was that if this IS the trend, what does a "knowledge work" version of my profession look like? If you could automate physical requirements, do you train an AI to give a "Raffy Anaesthetic" vs a different one? Or perform a "Mr Smith" gall bladder surgery vs a different style? I mean arguably there are different populations and you could argue who has the best technique but essentially it slowly starts to look like a winner take all game like sports. After all, there is only 1 number 1 tennis player, but many number 1's because of different countries...
What would your job look like in a "knowledge work" only future?
- Raffy
PS - Given it's been 2 years, I'll be going back through the feedback and tweaking things. Do you like/dislike the subtle changes this year? Let me know with 1 click! I read the survey every week (& keep tweaking things with your feedback!)
