Week in the life
It's been a more enjoyable week after the short break. A nice mix of work and getting back into old routines. I even went for a personal training session this week (and am still regretting it because of how sore I am!).
I received several emails from readers/listeners of the podcast and I have to say, it absolutely makes my week. If you have any feedback or just want to say hi, drop me an email or voice message. Especially if you have ay highlights from the newsletter or podcast.
Last weeks article on Medium seems to be doing well outside of the readership of the newsletter. I received a surprise notification that it's earnt a few dollars on there. I've never really thought of myself as a writer before so it feels a bit strange having a platform that's monetised my writing. I know I've seen $0.02 from there, but this felt a bit different. I think because I don't really promote Medium articles much, it's being FOUND and read.
Maybe I'll have to keep up this writing thing after all. And consider myself an author now?! 🤣
On the 2022 calendar front, there seems to have been the inevitable delays in getting the orders last week. I'm hoping they will be physically with me in the next few days so I can start packing and shipping them out to folks soon. If you'd like one, remember to use the code 'sunday10' for a further 10% off.
In order to keep this section from overwhelming the newsletter, more on cats, photos and more over on the blog...
Creative update
randInt EP 021 - Multiskilled man working in the shadows for start-ups
The second last episode of randInt for 2022 is an interview-sode with someone who did med school but ended up with a career in many different start-ups.
Ryan Begley shares his unique perspective from having done the grind of the university years and then jumping into the (relatively) unknown area of entrepreneurship.
So far, the feedback has been great for this episode! Would love to know what you think
Melbourne 2022 Wall Calendar (pre-order) (~$22)
https://photosbyraffy.com/product/melbourne-2022-wall-calendar
As mentioned above, delays have pushed out shipping by a few days, but I'm going to bug the printers all of next week and hopefully get them into your hands soon!
If you'd like one at a discounted price, you can use the code "sunday10" to get another 10% during the pre-order time!
I haven't shared the discount elsewhere but here! Goes great as a Xmas or Secret Santa gift!
Gadgets & Tech
SBELive Coffee Warming Mug (~$70)
I've written about the Ember Mug before and how it keeps my coffee warm. It's super pricey for what it is and I was hoping something else would come into the market that's similar and finally here it is!
This mug has all the features of the Ember (minus the requirement for an app - why does a coffee mug need an app anyway?) and the base doubles has a phone charger to boot! Best of all, it's less than half price of an Ember!
- 66W GaN Charger - So many people ask about USB-C chargers currently since most phones don't come with one. This one is compact and powerful enough for most laptops too.
- Magnetic Designer reading lights- I seem to be going through a cool lighting phase. I saw these things advertised and I have to say I do like the idea of having these as reading lights! No wiring and USB rechargeable
Read
I finally finished this classic novel and now see what a friend was referring to. It blends a lot of elements of Arabic/Islamic culture into elements of the novel and even in the way things are named.
For a sci-fi novel, I have to say it relies more heavily on the politics and role of prophecy elements than what traditional sci-fi books tend to explore. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the trilogy.
Watch
Watchtower of Turkey (~3min)
This is one of the earliest videos that got me super excited about making short travel videos. I can't believe this was edited in just a weekend because it's just so awesome.
It's a 3 minute explosive tour of the sights and sounds of Turkey and I can't count the number of times I've rewatched this for inspiration.
Quote I'm pondering
"Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious."
– Peter Ustinov
As mentioned over on the blog, I went to see Nazeem Hussain (Australian comedian) do a test stand-up routine last week. This quote I think perfectly sums up comedy (at least his brand and the stuff I generally prefer).
Though parts were laugh out loud funny, the underlying themes were indeed quite serious: colonialism, racism, cancel culture and more. Written as a statement, it sounds more like a lecture, but just check out his Youtube clips or Netflix special and I think you'll see what I mean.
Comedy seems like a way of reflecting back to society the odd habits and sad truths that we can't bear to see yet seriously. In a way, it's often the comedians that highlight the ridiculousness of the serious issues to the masses.
Truly random...
- Riding Shotgun - Ever wonder why riding in the front of a car is called "riding shotgun" rather than anything else? Well, it turns out it did used to involve weapons...
That's all I have for yet another week ! Hope you enjoyed the newsletter. As always, I simply LOVE hearing from you and your opinions. Feedback is always welcome!
Stay safe!
- Raffy
PS - What was your favourite part of the email this week? Let me know with 1 click! I read the survey every week (& keep tweaking things with your feedback!)
