4 Key Factors of a Successful 5 Out System

Coach ,

Cody Toppert’s resume is impressive. He has worked with coaches such as Mike D'Antoni, Igor Kokosov, Chris Finch and Penny Hardaway.

Toppert spent 2018-2019 as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns. He was also the head coach for the Haitian Men’s National Team and top assistant at Memphis and LSU.

Currently, he is the Head Coach at Washington Wizards' G League affiliate Capital City Go-Go

Coach Toppert’s 5-out system consists of 4 key factors:

-- Pace

-- Player Movement

-- Shot Selection

-- Ball Movement

Pace is hard to guard for a defense.

The goal is to play at a fast tempo to create more possessions and maintain a rhythm to the game. This will create easy scoring opportunities early in the shot clock for the offense.

Style of Play

In transition offense, running wide & valuing corners is key to getting open looks in the 5 out system.

The goal in running wide is to find the nearest sideline and run wide with vision to the basketball.

By doing so, a team can create opportunities for their 5 man to break free in the middle. Running wide creates opportunities to stretch the defense for early open shots.

Valuing the corners allows the ball handler to push the basketball in the middle of the floor to suck the defense in.

Therefore, by valuing the corners, the corners will be filled with shooters for early open shot opportunities. Coach Topp explains here:

 Run Wide

The 5-out system allows for great spacing if done properly.

In transition, the 5-out system allows a team to run simple actions for success.

Drag Quicks and Zooms are a part of creating the spacing.

A Drag Quick consists of 5 out on the perimeter with corners filled. The big man comes up and screens the ball handler. After screening the ball handler, the player turns and sets a pin down for the shooter in the weakside corner.

This action is very hard to defend because it puts the big in a pickle because the big not only has to defend the ball screen but then turn and take on the pin down. Coach Toppert illustrates the Drag Quick here:
