Under the leadership of Yolett McPhee-McCuin, Ole Miss Women’s Basketball has reemerged as a national contender. Now in her seventh season in Oxford, Coach Yo continues to raise the bar—guiding to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth in 2024-25.
She has successfully transformed the Ole Miss basketball program in just a few short years, thanks to her attention to detail when it comes to developing her players every offseason.
Let’s take a look at how she managed to turn her program around and get to the big stage
It all starts with your beliefs
Belief is contagious. Coach Yo talks about the importance of having tunnel vision as a coach. Once you live your belief, your players and their actions will follow and it ultimately brings the team together and ready to compete. Coach Yo also talks about the importance of blocking out outside noise and not letting the negative energy throw you and your players off balance. Set goals, set intentions, block the noise and work.
Evaluate: Attention to Detail
As we are getting ready to plan what’s next for next year, we now have to evaluate our team and also evaluate each player individually. Where are we now and what do we need to do to get to the next level? Coach McPhee-McCuin talks about the importance of measuring progress. You can adjust your measurables based on your performance outcomes and style of play. Coach Yo shares her concept of “license” to shoot 3pt shots.
Start Up Plan
Now that we have our players bought in and we know where we need to get there, we need to properly plan. What drills can we use to get them there? How does that fit in our offense?
Coach Yo talks about her way of planning the development of her players on a weekly basis. She talks about the importance of having a system in ball handling/dribbling development for guards, and teaching her forwards on how to develop their offensive game to fit in offensive system.
Hope you can take something from Coach Yo and start preparing for your next big moment now.
Always keep improving,
