Coach ,
Today’s feature coach is Lyndsay Gottlieb, women's head coach for the USC Trojans
With the abundance of pick-and-roll actions being utilized at all levels, coaches continually need to evolve their coverages and strategies. The last thing you want to do is stick to a defensive strategy that is outdated and not effective.
During the Pro Coach Clinic, Coach Gottlieb shared her thoughts and strategies based on her work as a college coach and now on the bench in the NBA in Defending The Pick and Roll From College to The Pros.
Coach Gottlieb shares in this clinic
- How to build PNR coverages into your preseason and offseason work
- Concepts such as Switch and Down, Bully, and Deep Drop
- Overview of the Next Coverage, one of the newest PNR coverages
In this clip, Coach Gottlieb discusses the basic principles of guarding a pick and roll both from the on-ball defenders perspective as well as off-ball defenders.
The best takeaway for me was in the Q&A segment where Coach Gottlieb talked about the importance of creating footwork drills based on the actions a player would perform in defending a ball screen (Example: a post player sprinting from low post to opposite wing, then sliding out as if they are hedging, then sprinting back) vs. using cones.
