One of the things we cannot forget to focus on during our pre-season individual development is to teach our big men how to attack the high post. Especially if we are going to be playing against the zone, big men that can be dangerous from high post can be a game changer for the whole flow of the offense, as it helps us to spread the zone and create

Today, we have NBA Player Development Coach Dave Severns who is going to go over 3 effective and simple high post moves that can be effective for any type of big man, does not matter how big/small, athletic/unathletic they are - it’s all about the footwork and body positioning. Players can learn them very quickly and implement them immediately.

Front Pivot Inside Foot

The first move is super simple, however it needs to be drilled, and it needs to be drilled from both sides of the paint. It is important that players get low on their feet and keep a stable stance on the pivot. Once players are comfortable shooting the mid-range jumper from the pivot, it can be really dangerous against any zone offense, if we do a good job in moving the ball around.

Reverse Pivot Jab Jumpshot

In this move, we are going to be pivoting with our outside foot out, and we will fake jab to the baseline before the shot. This move is excellent especially when the zone defense expects our big man to not be a shooter. Just like with the previous move, it is important to stay low on our feet, and also make sure our jab is believable, and we look like we are actually about to drive. Look how Coach Severns teaches the move in this drill:

Front Pivot Rip - Outside Hand Layup

To tie things up, we will use a move that will allow us to fake our defense into a hard closeout and attack the rim. Watch Coach Severns how he emphasizes the feet pointing towards the basket and making sure the pump fake is believable.

In all these drills, make sure you put the right emphasis on balance and stability, and also make sure that feet are pointing towards the basket. It is important that we keep drilling the fundamentals, as they are the ones that can make the biggest difference in our game.

Always keep improving,
