If you want your players to own their dribble this season—no matter how much pressure the defense brings—Dave Severns has the blueprint.

Severns has coached and developed talent at the highest levels, and his Elite Ballhandling & Passing course on CoachTube is packed with pro-level details you can use right now in high school, college, or AAU workouts.

Here are 3 of his favorite drills that build toughness, control, and confidence:

Pound Dribble Drill (with Contact)

This isn’t your typical warm-up.

✅ Players pair up—one pounds the ball low and hard

✅ The other lightly slaps their arm throughout the drill

✅ It simulates real-game fouls and contact, forcing players to maintain control under pressure

Ball security starts here. Physical, focused, and foundational.

Scissor Drill (2 Players, 2 Balls)

This one builds rhythm, passing, and chemistry.

✅ Two players, each with a ball

✅ Go between the legs, between again, then pass with the right hand

✅ Repeat, switch hands, stay in sync

This drill teaches both control and teamwork. It’s a guard’s go-to for clean handles and fast reactions.

4-Square “Change” Drill

Forget cones—this is all movement and decision-making.

✅ Start at the baseline

✅ Dribble up to the elbow, cut across, backpedal to the opposite baseline, then sprint baseline-to-baseline

✅ Make a change-of-direction move at each turn

This is how you simulate chaos, teach change on the fly, and build in-game footwork under fatigue.
