Coach ,
As we are all getting ready to start our season, we are looking to maximize our offensive efficiency by perfecting the offensive system that we want to play.
We play 5 on 5 and scrimmage in practice and focus on executing our plays in hopes that our offense will be getting better by each game.
However, one of the biggest mistakes that coaches at every level do is that in efforts of maximizing their offensive efficiency by focusing all of their energy on perfecting their offensive system, they forget to work on players’ individual skills.
Why is this a problem?
Well there are two reasons.
From a short term perspective, a lot of the hard work that your players have done in the off season will go down the drain, as players do not work on their individual skills, and that will cause them to miss shots, throw bad passes and turn the ball over, as their ball-handling and passing skills will not be as good as at the beginning of the season.
And of course, from the long-term perspective, you want your players to be constantly getting better.
But how can you fit player development in your busy practice schedule, especially if you have a whole team on the court for your practice?
Legendary NBA skills coach and current assistant coach at University of Grand Canyon Ed Schilling created drills that can be done in team setting and sharpen your players skills, while can be done in only a few minutes and provide each player to get their reps in.
Here’s three of them:
#1) Perfect Passing Drill
Let’s take a look at the Perfect Passing drill. In this drill, you will get to work on not only your passing ability, but also your court awareness and movement without the ball. (click on image for FREE video)
#2) Circle Shot Drill
This drill is a classic. It provides your players with an opportunity to work on their form and work their range up all the way to behind the three point line. This is a very efficient drill that helps your players to warm up their shot and get them ready for 5 on 5.
This drill can be used as a very effective warm-up before team stretching. (click on image for FREE video)
21 Skip
Another great drill that helps us to work on our passing, driving and finishing against the competition is 21 skip. (click on image for video)
Coach Schilling does an excellent job on player skill development while installing and perfecting his offensive system.
Yes, you should maximize the efficiency of your offensive system, just remember to not do it at the cost of individual development.
Thank you to Coach Schilling for putting this complimentary course together!
