Coach ,
One of the most important parts of offense is figuring out how to attack a pick and roll.
Now defenses are coming up with many ways to defend the pick and roll and wanted to share a couple of concepts from one of the brightest minds in coaching.
Ryan Pannone, currently Assistant Coach for Alabama has collected endless coaching experience from all levels of basketball including High School, College, Euroleague, China, NBA and the G-League.
Coach Pannone shares strategies and techniques to combat the most popular PNR coverages in How to Attack Switching, Ice, and Drop PNR Coverages.
Here are 2 ways to attack the Pick and Roll:
#1 - Reject the Pick and Roll
The first look in attacking the pick and roll is looking to reject.
A player always wants to find the quickest way to create an advantage against a defense.
By doing a reject, it allows you to get downhill the quickest possible way.
This is becoming taught at every level because teams are finding that it becomes the easiest way to draw defenders and make a play.

#2 - Off-Ball Cuts
Everyone thinks about the pick and roll being about 2-3 players.
Cutting plays a huge part in a successful pick and roll.
The more movement before the pick and roll and after the pick and roll will set up for more success offensively.
Creating movement puts the defense out of player by the time the pick and roll is set.
This clinic shows in detail the advantage of attacking the pick and roll in different creative ways.
Coach Pannone uses game footage from both international and NBA teams to show strategies such as the Gortat Screen, Rejecting the screen, Utilizing 45 cuts as well as specific plays to run.
Thank you to Coach Pannone for sharing!
