Basketball Coaching Family,
Coach Jim Crutchfield is a coaching legend with his 84% winning percentage(highest among all college basketball coaches) and his style of play known as “The System” which has averaged over 100 points per game and consistent top 10 scoring.
Grantland did an article about him in 2013 that discusses the difference in his style of play vs. the Grinnell system.
Coach Crutchfield has not spoken at clinics in the past and many coaches have been curious about his success, especially his offensive system used at West Liberty and now at Nova Southeastern.
We were super excited when Coach Jordan Fee presented on the press system used by Coach Crutchfied. Coach Fee played for Coach Crutchfield at West Liberty and now is a coach on this staff.
There were many takeaways for me from his session. Here are a few.
- Their high scoring offense is powered by their press, and not the other way around. The defense is full court man to man, run and jump press that attempts to create chaos on the floor.
- The press is not about run and gun, but having the desire to stop your opponent from scoring vs, trading baskets and trying to outscore them.
- Coaching this style means less control over your team. As a coach, you have to have a sense of trust with your players to allow them to play at this pace.
- Your ability to quickly match up with a player is vital to the press success when converting to defense. Coach Crutchfield refers to this as “Musical Chairs:.
- Coach Crutchfield works on finding open players in transition on a daily basis In this clip, Coach Fee explains in more detail.
If you are looking to play at a faster pace and extend the floor with pressure, you will love his concepts in the videos below.
