A lot of teams use the show and recover method to defend the ball screen.
You need to have various ways to punish and prevent your opponent from employing this defensive tactic to slow down your pick and roll attack.
Let’s take a look at a couple ways you can prevent or punish this method of defending the ball screen.
- Ram Screens and Wedge Screens (Screening actions prior to the ball screen taking place to not allow the player to show)
- Mailman Exception (Arriving at the same time as the show to bait them into the coverage you want and to manipulate the coverage you want)
2 coaches who really have mastered this concept are Coach Coronel and Coach McMains go over these 2 ways to combat this defensive strategy of ball screen defense.
I really liked how Coach McMains breaks down using a ram screen and how it doesn’t allow the defender to use the “show method” to defend the ball screen.
Coach Zico Coronel breaks down how to punish using the “Mailman Exception” I really like this method. Coach Coronel goes over from Karl Malone Former Utah Jazz Hall of Famer and shows how to punish the show method of defending the screen.
The defender and ball screener arrive together baiting the defender into the coverage.
Coach Mcmains and Coach Coronel in this course do a great job of taking a deep dive into various ways of preventing and punishing the show defensive coverage against the ball screen.
I really enjoyed the various ways they showed with video clips and diagrams.
