Coach Excellence Series Day 14: Coach Jim Boone shares Ideas and Concepts from the Pack Line Defense

Dec 01, 2020 2:40 am

Coach ,

Continuing our email series in November, today we share some Pack Line defense ideas and concepts from Coach Jim Boone of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.

The Pack Line has been around for many years starting with the success of Coach Dick Bennett at Washington State and continues with hundreds of men’s and women's programs using this defense.

For many teams, stopping ball penetration is critical to success and the Pack Line helps with this while maintaining pressure on the ball.

While there is content out there on the defense, you will not find a better teacher than Coach Jim Boone and the scale and depth of him teaching the Pack Line Defense.

Here Coach Boone Explains the DNA of a Dominant Defense

Something that Coach Boone said in this course that I had never heard before and I thought was so relevant with our limited time to prepare this season:

“There are only three things you can control on the defensive end.  Your conversion defense, your defensive rebounding, and your low post defense.”

As we know, easy shots will beat you and taking those away has to be part of any defensive system.

Another important area to prepare for is the various pick and rolls you will see.  In this clip Coach Boone teaches the Hard Show against side ball screens and the positioning of players away from the ball.
