As you know Five Out is one of the most used offenses throughout all levels of basketball. From youth sports to the NBA and WNBA, Five Out is successfully used because of the versatility and freedom that it allows. Here are four ideas from some of the top coaches in hoops to take your Five Out offense to the next level.
#1 Initial Action and Spacing
Your first action in your offense plays an important role in the flow of the action being run. Making sure there is adequate spacing helps spread the defense out and get open looks. Check out LSU assistant coach Cody Toppert’s early offensive strategy.

#2 Transition into Five Out
Creating options that players can use when transitioning the ball into your Five Out motion allows for the creation of good shots in transition and opening the floor to create lanes. Here is a transition drill that helps create those habits from the University of Oklahoma’s Head Coach, Jenny Baranczyk.

#3 Post Play in Five Out
While Five Out is great for positionless play, incorporating a true post player is possible in this style of offense. Using actions that create for post players can add dimension to your Five Out and make it harder to guard. Using pin down screens, backscreens, and rip screens are a good way to create those opportunities for post players.
