From NBA to youth basketball the positionless trend is not slowing down.
With positionless basketball now being played at the highest level of the game in the NBA and NCAA. There must be something to it.
As you know, having positionless basketball players makes it harder for your opponent to match up because you have players that are more skilled on the floor and not regulated to a certain area of the floor.
This gives your players more chances to develop and tougher to defend. As a coach, you can simply teach the same overall concepts and focus on skill development. Which helps you win more games.
Three benefits to playing positionless:
- Develops Players
- Able to play your best players regardless of size
- Removes the post defense from just sitting at the rim
First off you must be able to execute it properly.
To do that you have to have skilled players.
Coach Chris Johnson who currently trains some of the top NBA players such as LeBron James in the NBA knows what it takes to execute.
In the video below here Chris Johnson talks about finishing when it comes to positionless basketball, which is one of most important skills in basketball with most shots being taken at the rim or from the 3 point line.

Why To Run Positionless Motion Offense?
Even at the youth level Rick Torbett has been teaching the Read and React offense for years. His offense is positionless.
You can play it 5 out, 4 out 1 in or 3 out 2 but the offense reactions are based upon habits not positions.
Whether you go all out 5 out or are a mismatch or injury away from using positionless basketball to get your best 5 players on the floor. Smart Coaches will study everything to give your team a competitive advantage.
