The Art of Rebounding

We’ve all had those games where you get outrebounded by some absurd amount, and lose. What can we control as a coach to help our players get those rebounds next season.

Most players are taught one thing when it comes to rebounding, “effort”. While this is true, it only goes so far. Effort works well until a player comes across an opponent with 4 inches and 20 pounds on them.

That’s where technique and practice come in. Here are 4 tips and drills to add to your next practice so that you can give your players that competitive edge.

#1 Go Get It

This drill is great for emphasizing the importance of keeping the ball high. Players tend to bring the ball down which gives the defense a higher chance of getting their hands on it. Keeping the ball high also allows for a quicker put back. Check out this rebounding drill from Coach Bechler.

#2 Two Man Passing Back One v One

Incorporating competitive rebounding drills is a great way to increase the stakes, and bring some competitive energy into practice while working on crucial concepts. This drill involves multiple parts of the game including scoring, steals, fouls, and rebounding. Making a rebound worth extra points is a great incentive and emphasizes the importance of getting that rebound. Check out this competitive offensive/defensive drill from Fairleigh Dickinson University's Head Coach, Stephanie Gaitley.

#3 Swim Move

The swim move is a great technique to teach any player. It allows players to gain position in a quick and efficient manner. Adding this technique to any rebounding drill will improve rebounding efficiency considerably. Check out these techniques from UCLA Assistant Coach, Darren Savino.

#4 Spin Out

The spin out technique is similar to a swim move, where it lets players get position quickly. Spinning out is an efficient move to make when low in the paint and your defender is behind you. Check out more of UCLA Assistant Coach Darren Savino’s rebound techniques.

Rebounding can win or lose games, so add these few drills to your next practice to work on this critical skill.
