Mastering The Art of Drive-and-Kick in Early Offense

Coach-

As we are trying to speed up our game and take advantage of fast break possession, we also need to make sure we know how to run our secondary offense effortlessly.

It's not as much about running a certain scheme or call plays in our early offense. In an ideal case scenario, we would want our players to know how to attack the rim on secondary offense based on what the defense is doing.

Today, the legendary University of Arkansas Head Coach John Calipari will break down for us the art of drive and kick on the secondary offense and will show us 3 drills that we can start implementing in our practice immediately.

One More

Coach Cal likes to use this drill because it simply teaches players how to quickly pass the ball for “One More” pass, while putting emphasis on voice and visual cues to communicate with the ball handler. Players will focus on passing the ball at the highest speed possible. Watch the full video here:

Drive Drive Shoot

This drill again teaches players how to maintain spacing and practice fundamentals of drive and pass. Coach Cal puts an emphasis on proper footwork and fundamentals of the drive on the catch. Another thing to pay attention to is to still be focused on the visual cue during the catch. Watch the breakdown of Drive Drive Shoot drill here:

Randomness Drill

This is a great drill for teaching players how to both communicate and react to each other after drive and kick. Coach Calipari explains how important it is for players to have their own language and terminology to understand each other on the court. Great way for players to work on their spacing and how to move without the ball.Watch Coach Calipari break down the Randomness Drill here:

Adding these drills to our practice can improve our players' ability to be able to attack the rim in secondary transition and help them to improvise and take advantage of the defense not being set up.

Thank you to NJBCA and Coach Calipari for sharing these drills and to watch the full presentation you can click here-->.
