5 Things I Learned About 5 Out Offense

Coach ,

If you are watching the NBA playoffs right now, you are seeing many teams utilizing 5 Out principles and actions in their offensive attacks.

With the emphasis on analytics and the importance of the 3 point shot, teams that use a 5 Out alignment continue to add new actions and as one would expect, there is a trickle down effect as you see teams at the college level using it.

Since the release of my first video The Open Post Offense, I have enjoyed watching the development of the offense and seeing coaches who have integrated other strategies within the offense.  I did not want to rest on my previous work knowing that the offense has evolved and there are coaches who are doing some creative things with the offense.

So what did I learn during the process of creating the new course 5 Out Concepts and Variations ?

1.) There is nothing new under the sun, as the scripture says.  5 Out alignments have been utilized for years.  I believe that you can credit Mike D’Antoni for bringing it to the NBA and showing its viability there when he first started running “Delay” actions.  When I first started researching 5 Out, Bob Huggins was my primary source and he has always given credit to Ed McClusky, a legendary high school coach from Pennsylvania, for the 5 Out.

2.) There are other actions you can run within 5 out other than pass and cut/pass and screen away.  While these actions are foundational, you can add more to the offense based on your teams abilities and experience.  A great example of this would be former Villanova women's coach Harry Perretta.

3.) The theory was that 5 Out alignments were only for teams with size mismatches, which is true in some cases.  However, you can still utilize 5 Out actions to create post up opportunities within the offense off cuts or dribble post ups.

4.) You can use 5 Out vs. zone defense.  Traditionally we use a starting alignment that is opposite of the zone (odd front offense vs. even front zone).  Here is a set play I have used the past 4 years to get open 3 point shots against the zone. 5 Out Zone Play

5.) One of the variations that I really enjoyed studying was the circle motion actions.  Here is a clip where I discuss how you can still get back into the circle pattern even when teams attempt to deny passes and disrupt your ability to move the ball.
