5 PNR Actions for Every Playbook

As coaches, we are constantly on the lookout for new ideas and actions to add to our playbooks. With the prevalence of ball screens being used at all levels, your ability to execute at both the individual player level to the team level is crucial.
Here are some actions we like that you can add to your playbook.
Side Spain PNR
We often see teams using the Spain PNR action from the middle of the floor, as shown in this clip from Coach Sergio Scariola’s clinic, but FC Barcelona likes to also use this action from the sideline.
NY Liberty Empty Side PNR
Being able to take away help is a plus when executing a ball screen action. We really like this play design from the NY Liberty to set up a side PNR for Sabrina Inoescu with an empty corner.
Pick and Pop, Burn The Slot
With the ability of post players to also shoot from the perimeter, pick and pop actions should also be added to your playbook. Here is a clip of a side ball screen into a pick and pop action. The 45/burn cut by the player in the slot removes the ability to stunt at the shooter and creates a 2-1 situation.
Dribble Handoffs
The use of dribble handoffs has increased over the years especially to counter PNR coverages like Ice/Blue.
Since dribble handoffs can also be considered as ball screens, here is an action from Real Madrid to create an open perimeter shot after a staggered screen action.
Weave Action into Ball Screen
Utilizing weave action before setting a ball screen has gained more popularity in recent years as a way to loosen the defense and get the ball into the middle of the floor for a player to go downhill off the ball screen. Here is Baylor utilizing the weave.
