Defending Ball Screens by Cancelling Them Completely

Apr 13, 2021 9:28 pm

Coach ,

With the plethora of different ball screen actions and plays, coaches constantly have to adjust their defensive philosophy toward defending them.  Over the years we have seen the emergence of downing/icing ball screens, blitzing, as well as the development of the Next defense coverage in Europe (Stefan Grassinger briefly discusses the defense in this clinic)

So what if you can completely cancel the ball screen by not allowing the ball screen to take place?

In his new course, Coach Liam Flynn teaches this method of defending all variety of pick and rolls in Pick & Roll Defence - How To Teach `Cancelling` PNRs

Coach Flynn discusses the basic concepts on defending the pick and roll from both the on ball defender, the screeners defender, and the remaining defenders away from the ball.  Utilizing drills and small sided games, Coach Flynn builds up the defense to a unit working together to both disrupt and impact the offense.

In the clip below, Coach Flynn covers the foundational principles of the defense: Positioning and Stunting.

In addition, Coach Flynn also discusses defense adjustments against:

  • Long rolls by the screener
  • Short rolls by the screener
  • Pick and pop situations
  • Switching situations

What I like about this course is that these concepts can be adaptable to all levels of play and allows teams to be more aggressive based on its simplicity.  Rather than having multiple coverages depending on where the screen occurs, you can have one coverage to build off of.
