Elevate an Offense with Dribble Handoffs (DHO)

Coach ,

Dribble handoffs (DHO’s) are becoming more and more prevalent in every level of basketball.

Matt Goldsmith, head coach of the College of New Jersey, has implemented the DHO in every facet of his offense. Last season, his team averaged 76.4 points per game.

DHO’s are similar to ball screens, but have been proven to be harder for the defense to guard. The best way to understand the DHO is to understand the advantages it will bring.

One of the main benefits is a DHO allows the offense to have less ball pressure at the point of attack. Coach Goldsmith explains in the video below.

Coach Goldsmith explains that ball screens are very effective because everyone practices them daily. There are not many teams that practice DHO drills daily

On a ball screen, the defense can pressure the ball handler by hedging or blitzing. The DHO allows less ball pressure at the point of attack because a DHO happens very quickly, not giving the defense enough time to react. If there is a lot of pressure that occurs then the offense can just cut backdoor.

The fake DHO is a great way to create space offensively. By faking a DHO, it helps create space to operate an offense. It allows room for gaps, misdirection screens, and backdoors. The player faking DHO can also keep it and drive to the basket. Coach Goldsmith shows why and how this is effective.

Coach Goldsmith explains that the best way to perfect any type of action is practicing over and over again. One of the best ways to do that is without any defenders.

2 on 0 with no defense is a way to get a lot of reps fast. This allows a team to work on the proper footwork and timing without defenders to allow for a more precise understanding on how to complete a DHO.

As a coach, you start with the simple, and move on to the more complicated.
