Coach ,

The summer is the best time to advance a player’s game. There is a great quote used by many coaches:

“Winter will always ask summer what you did to prepare, and it will never lie.”

The Baylor Bears have a plan and workout to prepare for the winter.

Baylor University is fresh off winning a National Championship. It was the first for head coach Scott Drew

Elite guard play contributed in a major way to winning the championship.

Coach Drew organizes the Baylor Guard Development Workout into 8 different sections designed to help your players succeed on the court.

1.) Warm Up Shooting

2.) Commando Ball Handling

3.) 5 Spot Shooting

4.) Jab Step/Shot Fake Series

5.) Tracing the Arc

6.) “Get Open” Series

7.) 1 on 1 Moves

8.) 5 Spot Cool Down

The warm up shooting series is a way to help give a shooter confidence going into a workout. It is best to start inside/out; therefore, it will help build your confidence by seeing the ball go through the basket.

Baylor wants to be in attack mode in every move they do. The jab step/ shot fake series shooting allows a player to get multiple different shots in a drill.

5 different shots in 5 different spots while covering the whole floor.

Baylor goes at a pace that mistakes are welcome. To get better there has to be uncomfort to create a comfort level.

The jab step is a great way to get your defender leaning a certain direction to create an opportunity for a driving lane or open shot. It allows a player enough time to create separation to make a move.

The shot fake is one of the best tools used for an offensive player. If used, it can be a great addition to a players game to give more time for a shot or to draw a foul.

Shooters have to be able to get open to shoot at a high percentage. The L Cut, V Cut, & straight line cut are ways to allow an offensive player to create space to fire their shot.

Basketball coaches always preach:

“Do your work early”

Creating space to catch the basketball in areas where you’re in range is a must for a great shooter.
