Coach Luke Yaklich as you may know is a rising star in college coaching.
Know as a defensive specialist Coach Yaklich was in charge of the #2 defensive teams at Michigan with John Beilein and helped Shaka Smart out for two years at Texas before becoming head coach at The University of Illinois Chicago this season.
At last year's Coaches Clinic, one of the topics he discussed that I really enjoyed was about building a mission statement for your defense inside your program.
What is your mission?
What are your values on defense?
What are your principles on defense?
What are you going to hold your TEAM accountable to on defense?
What are you going to hold your PLAYERS accountable for on defense?
In the video below Coach Yaklich provides a framework on how to develop your mission statement with your team and how you will keep them accountable.
Missions, Values, and Principles on Defense
As coaches, we all struggle on the defensive end of the floor teaching our players how to communicate. Coach Yaklich “Communication Box” drill will help your players communicate better with emphasizing his “Defensive Vitamins.”
Example of Executing Communication Plan
Coach Yaklich has learned from some of the best in the business John Beilein and Shaka Smart. We can always be growing and getting better as coaches. I really enjoyed Coach Yaklich's clinic presentation on Building and Sustaining a Defensive Culture.
Always be growing,
The Coaches Clinic Community
