“Footwork is one of the primary prerequisites to becoming a great player.” - Coach K

Footwork is a skill that translates into every aspect of basketball at any level. The best players to ever play the game of basketball all have had unbelievable footwork.

Coach Ido Singer is a former professional basketball player and a college coach with 10+ years of experience at the High School, Division 3, NAIA, and Division 1 levels.

Coach Singer has developed the Ido Ultimate Footwork Playbook

The playbook is designed to help players and coaches alike, learn how to better utilize footwork to score and become a more efficient, faster, and a more deadly scorer on the court.

Drill #1 - Front Pivot Bottom Foot

The front pivot bottom foot drill is designed to help players improve on facing up with the proper footwork.

Speed is a tangible that will be developed as the drill is performed many times. The purpose of the drill is to go at a speed where the footwork is correct.

The drill consists of two chairs and a rebounder(s) and two basketballs.

The basketballs are placed in the chairs and the shooter runs from chair to chair working on picking up the basketball and making the proper move.

The front pivot bottom foot is a great footwork move for players who like to post up outside the paint. This allows the player to catch the ball and have the option to turn correctly and go to work. (click on images for free drill videos):

Drill #2 - Drop Step Bottom Foot

The drop step bottom foot drill is footwork that every player should utilize.

A drop step is a very common move that is used by post players on passes in the post.

The use of DHO’s in today’s game is a good reason to work on the drop step. On a DHO, the player could turn the corner into the drop step move.

The drop step bottom foot is a great way to get into a floater in the lane or a layup around the basket.

Drill #3 - Back Pivot - Counter - Step Through Bottom Foot

The back pivot counter step through bottom foot move is a power move designed to blow by someone with a quick first step.

The footwork is designed for players to face up and attack.

This a move that will help players catch the ball outside the post and blow by their defender for a play around the basket.

Footwork is a fundamental that can help separate a good player from a great player.

Kobe Bryant was known to work on the basic footwork fundamentals every single workout. He became obsessed with becoming great at the basics.

There is a story that Alan Stein tells about Kobe being asked why he worked on such basic footwork drills and Kobe responded: “Why do you think I’m the best player in the world? Because I never get bored with the basics”.
