Today, we are going to go back to the basics.
As it is the end of January, we don’t want to change too many things, but we want to implement small changes that can help us become more efficient in our already proven offensive strategy, and today, we are going to focus on our Pick and Roll actions.
Former WNBA Head Coach who currently leads Baylor Lady Bears will show us 3 simple things we can twist to help us run a more effective Pick and Roll
offense.
Work Your Feet
Once the ball handler goes past the ball screen, we want them to be able to either accelerate to the basket or throw a pass to the roller. The best way the ball handler can have their feet ready is when they stutter. We want the ball handler to essentially slow down and create separation of the ball handler and the screener. Watch Coach Collen breakdown ball handler’s footwork in the video below:
Perfecting The Outside Pass
In order to properly execute PnR offense, our players need to be fundamentally sound and know how to properly pass the ball off the pick. We need to spend some extra time practicing our off hand on the extra pass as well. Coach Collen talks about how continuously developing fundamentals ties in with running a successful PnR offense.
Twist The Screen
This simple adjustment works great when the defense goes under the screen. After the first initial ball screen, the screener can pivot and set the screen the other way. If the ball handler can react quickly and use that second screen, this can create an easy separation. Watch the breakdown of the Twist in the video below:
Even small changes can make a difference, especially in things like footwork or perfecting an off the dribble outside pass after pick can help open up a couple of possessions per game. It’s January, and every possession counts.
