Coach ,

Coach Sean Sweeney is currently an NBA Assistant Coach for the Dallas Mavericks who just came over from Detroit. Prior to Detroit, Coach Sweeney was an assistant coach for four seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Coach Sweeney has largely been credited for the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo during his time in Milwaukee and was Giannis's preferred workout partner.

The coach was the key contributor to making the Bucks defense skyrocket in defensive ratings after an abysmal 2013-14 season.

Here are few key points Coach Sweeney covers in his clinic Everything You Can Learn from an NBA Coach

  1. Fundamentals
  2. Teaching and Competing
  3. Building Relationships

Key #1 - Fundamentals

Coaches all want to improve on teaching fundamentals.

Coach Sweeney explains that when you think about fundamentals we think about: Dribble, Pass, and Shoot.

He explains that another fundamental that is taught in the NBA is screening.

Screening is very important, but also it is important for a player to know how to come off a screen.

Coach Sweeney shows a clip of a Pistons player in the video below of a player coming off a screen with his hands up ready to catch and shoot.

Key Point #2 - Teaching and Competing

Coach Sweeney explains that practice is the best time to enhance a team.

He says teaching should be “slow and methodical and clear and concise”.

The most important thing is getting players to be able to remember what they learn and be able to apply it.

Coach Sweeney explains that there needs to be an understanding on knowing the terminology and positioning and knowing the fundamentals.

The goal is to teach in a way to make sure everybody is on the same page and habits are formed.

Key Point #3 - Building Relationships

The biggest part of being a great coach is building authentic relationships.

In building relationships, there are 5 main keys to building an authentic relationship.

#1 History - what has happened in their life?

#2 Highlights - what are the best things that have happened to them?

#3 Hardships - what are the tough times they have been through?

#4 Hero - who is important to them?

#5 Hope - where do they want to go in life?
