The only thing that doesn't change is change

Howdy (1) ,

This isn't about the weather (even although the temperature has been up and down like a yo-yo in the past couple of weeks).

It's not about technology (this is not written using AI - I enjoy playing with words, so I'm not going to outsource it to a computer!).

It's about changes around the city. And I'm only talking about the central city, not about what's going on out in the suburbs (2).

Some changes will last for a long time, for example the new skyscrapers being built near the Commerzbank Tower. They aren't super high. What's impressive is that it's a group of four buildings, and each one is a different height.

Other building work has resulted in some new shops - including two new coffee shops that have opened in the last month. Excuse me, how many coffee shops does a city need??  Don't we have plenty already?

Sorry, that's the person who doesn't drink coffee speaking. But they might get me in, ... if they have good cakes πŸ˜‹.

Then there are the pop-up shops (3). Five or six years ago I didn't know what a pop-up shop was. But I have noticed several around in the last few months. One has stalls inside run by different people, so the types of things you can buy there are really varied (4).

Two other stores that are a few months old are full of things created by local artists. I love going in and browsing (5) 😊. Unfortunately I haven't bought anything at either place yet. That's because too often I think about how I could make the things myself.

The saddest thing for me about change in the city is the shops that disappear. One big store is having a closing sale at the moment πŸ˜₯. I have purchased things, not so much because of the discounts but because they are things that I haven't found in other shops around the city yet. Now I have supplies to last me a while.

And so piece by piece the city changes.

Have you noticed things changing in the streets around you? Has one of your favourite shops closed? Have new shops opened? What do you think of the latest building project in your area? Tell me by replying to this email.

Enjoy the (short) week ahead,

Andrea

(1) howdy - very informal and short form of 'how are you?', often used as a greeting

(2) suburb - 'parts' or 'districts' of a city out from the city centre. These areas are mainly where people live (e.g. I live in the suburb of Bockenheim)

(3) pop-up shop - a shop set up quickly for only a short, limited time

(4) varied - not similar, a range of very different things

(5) browsing - looking through things casually, especially if think you might find something interesting.
