Greetings ,
I've always given people birthday cards. Years ago I started a list - mainly my relatives (1). I'd purchase a card and post it so it arrived on the right day, or give it directly to the person if they lived close by.
As my nephews (2) and nieces (3) started arriving (4), I added them to my list, too.
When you hear that I have 18 nieces and nephews, giving cards every year might sound crazy. And I guess it was for a while. But the babies weren't born all at one time, so the number of cards on my list increased slowly - it didn't feel too bad.
The other thing is that as the older ones reached their teens, I made the decision to stop giving cards as they left home. Remembering their birthdays was OK, however, I didn't want to be annoying (5) their parents all the time, checking on their addresses.
Every year I have a diary (6) so I can write down appointments I make. Early in each new year I sit down and write all the birthdays into my new diary, using my old one to get the dates right. As I turn the pages during the year, I see the birthday reminders and buy cards. The system works well.
Correction - most years my system has worked well.
Things started well this year.
Then one day in summer I had a horrible thought - I hadn't sent a card to a niece! But I didn't have anything written in my diary... That was confusing as I was sure her birthday was a few days away.
At home, I checked last year's diary.
Oh no! I was right and hadn't put her name into this year's diary π³.
The next day I bought and posted a card - before her birthday (just!). Then I emailed my sister, warning her that it was on the way, but would be (very) late.
Whew! That was close π«‘. This time, Auntie Andrea will be very careful as she writes the birthdays into next year's diary.
What do you think about birthday cards, ? Are they just for children or for older people, too? Do you give any birthday cards during the year?
Happy Birthday (for whenever) ππ,
Andrea
(1) relative - someone in your family, including aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
(2) nephew - the son of your brother or sister
(3) niece - the daughter of your brother or sister
(4) arriving - 'coming to earth'. A way of saying 'being born'.
(5) annoying - making them a bit crazy or upset, giving them a 'not her again!' feeling
(6) diary - a book for the year. It can be for writing things you do or how you feel (Dear Diary, Today was ....). Or it can be so you remember appointments or important dates.
