G'day ,
I have always liked summer, maybe because I grew up in an area that was definitely chilly during winter. So, I loved the idea of living somewhere really warm.
However, I moved to Germany 🤔.
One summer, I took a trip to Strasbourg.
Saturday was cloudless and it was forecast to be about 38°C.
I headed to the Cathedral to see the Astronomical Clock.
First, I had to wait in line and buy a ticket. Then, we had to line up and wait for the doors to open so we could go into the room with the clock. I spent at least two hours in the sun.
They finally opened the door and let us in. It was great to step inside, away from the sun and heat. I stood with my back against a stone wall and drank some water.
Soon, all my water was gone. More and more people were entering the room, and the heat from everyone's body was making it uncomfortable.
At last, the presentation about the clock began. As it continued, I started to feel dizzy (1). It got so bad I thought I was going to faint (2).
What to do?
The door to another room was open, so I went and sat down on a chair. I thought sitting down was better than falling to the floor unconscious (3).
In the larger room, without all the warm bodies around me, my head cleared. I listened to the presentation from where I was, and I even saw the parts move when the Astronomical Clock chimed (4).
When it had finished, I really needed a drink, so I went to the public drinking water fountain (5).
After I had drunk more than 1.5 litres, I felt a lot better.
That day was perhaps the first times I've felt too hot. It made being a tourist really hard.
Yes, I can function when the temperatures are high. However, I now know there's such a thing as too hot and being a tourist in such high temperatures isn't fun.
I know that there are probably those of you who arent enjoying the weather at the moment. Let me know if you think it's too hot.
Stay hydrated and don't melt!
Andrea
(1) dizzy - when you feel in your head like you are spinning around and around
(2) faint - to fall down and it's like you're asleep - you don't move by yourself, or talk
(3) unconscious - not 'awake', not alert or aware of what is happening around you. When you faint, you're unconscious.
(4) chimed - when the bells of the clock sounded. When a cuckoo clock chimes, the little bird pops out and says 'cuckoo'.
(5) drinking fountain - a place where you can get water to drink, usually by pressing a button. The water flows and you catch it in your mouth (or these days, a bottle).
