My last trip on the 9€ ticket

I wanted to get my money's worth!

Greetings, ,

This is a couple of weeks old now, but tell me where you think I went and if you are right, I will deliver some Australian snack food to your office, too!

Last weekend was the last chance to use the 9€ ticket, so I did.

I asked a number of people where I should go. There were some interesting ideas, but with some places I couldn't find a good connection with Regional Trains. Or, if there was an easy connection, it took way too long. It came down to two places: Kassel, with the added attraction of Documenta, or Karlsruhe.

Ummm.... confession time - I went somewhere else.

It was a three hour trip (same as a Regional Train to Kassel). The train wasn't so full, which was a bonus 😀.

It is a city that I hadn't heard much about, but it looked lovely and sounded interesting when I looked it up online.

To me Speyer had a different feel and architecture to many of the cities I have visited and so does this city.

It is on a river. The river is a lot smaller than the Main in Frankfurt. I don't think there would have been barges, but there were speed boats and other leisure craft.

As it was Saturday, there was a Farmers' Market. It was in a square in a more traditional part of town, away from the 'normal' chain stores. It was fun walking through the little streets leading off the market square and finding smaller, privately-run shops.

On the other side of the river there is a palace. Interestingly, it housed modern offices, including for a couple of political parties.

The trip back didn't start off very smoothly. We left on time, but sat at the first station for about 40 minutes, due to 'Official Measures' ('Behördliche Maßnahme'). That meant that instead of ending at the Frankfurt Central Train Station, our journey finished in a city outside the Frankfurt area. Outside Hesse, actually! That was OK. There were lots of connections to Frankfurt.

Are you curious? Guess. Where do you think I went?

It is the capital city of one of the German states.

The state is bordered by Germany and two other countries.

I should make this a competition - the first person with the right answer wins a prize!

Well, if you take the time to answer, I'll definitely tell you if you are right or not. And maybe I can organise a prize - an Australian snack or something.

Until next week,

Andrea
