Spring - the season for growing things

Hey ,

I’ve looked forward to this day for so long!

And it’s finally here.

Let me explain — I like to grow things.

When I was young, we had a vegetable garden. It was large, so Mum and Dad said we children could have our own little vegetable patches (1). I had heaps of fun — preparing the soil (2), choosing seeds (3) from what Mum and Dad had bought and then planting them.

Yes, we had to do the work of weeding (4) and watering. But for me that was balanced by watching the plants develop and then harvesting (5) the vegetables.

Not just harvesting them, but eating them, too. Everything ended up on the family dinner table.

My first flat had a back garden. It wasn’t anything special, just some grass and a rose bush.

While I was living there, the flats were sold. I spoke with the new landlord, who agreed to let me look after what should have been the flower beds (it meant less work for him).

Except I didn’t grow flowers!

I planted vegetables, like carrots, beans, even lettuces and had a few herbs. Doing little jobs outside after work was fun — planting, weeding and watering in spring and summer, followed by cleaning up in autumn.

And it was great eating fresh vegetables when they were ready to harvest!

Then I moved. Although I tried to grow herbs at my next flat, it didn’t work. The bit of garden was too dark.

So far in Germany, I haven’t grown things either. The first flat didn’t have a garden. The garden at the second flat was too dark.

But last year I moved.

There’s a little garden (which I’d love a small part of). But more importantly, I have a sunny balcony.

All to myself!

I was given a plant as I moved in (which is still alive 😀). And now, I’m buying herbs. Ones I can use when I cook. Today I bought rosemary, but I plan to add a couple of others, too.

I'm so excited!

So, , are you a gardener? Do you like growing things? Please share your story...

Have a green week

Andrea

(1) patch - a small area of a garden. Vegetable 'patch' can also be used the same as vegetable 'garden'.

(2) soil - another word for 'dirt' or 'earth' - the 'stuff' plants grow in

(3) seeds - the small, dry things that plants grow from

(4) weeding - pulling out plants that shouldn't be there (plants that shouldn't be there are weeds)

(5) harvesting - picking vegetables or fruit off the plant when they're ready for eating. Or digging up carrots, potatoes and other root vegetables when they're big enough.
