Not the best driver, but a great person!

Hey ,

I've been taking a bus regularly for the past few months and it's been interesting learning the driving styles of the different drivers.

Most of the drivers are men, but there are a couple of ladies as well. I've had one of the ladies quite often.

As much as I hate to admit it, the ride is uncomfortable when the regular female driver is behind the wheel (1). While a lot of the male drivers take it nice and steady and so give the passengers a smooth ride, this female driver goes fast, then she suddenly slows down before going fast again. The ride is really jerky, and not smooth at all!

The only time I have had a smooth ride with her was one day when there was some rain. That day she drove far better than she normally does!

Last weekend, she was the driver again. I got on at the beginning of the route (2), so the bus was almost empty. A young man got on too. I don't know if he knew her, or if he was one of those people who likes to talk to everyone, but he started chatting with her. She answered him and their conversation lasted for a few minutes.

We headed off. About half way to my stop, a couple of young boys got on. Each of them had a bicycle. One of them stood in the bus doorway with his bike.

The driver looked back in the rearview mirror. Then she left her seat and moved to where the boys were. She calmly explained that the doorway had to be free for other passengers to get on and off. She didn't only explain, she helped them move the bikes, too. She was very patient.

Then she went back to her seat and started driving again.

I was really impressed with what she did, and how she did it. Although her driving style hasn't changed, my impression of her as a driver is now much better.

If you've ever used public transport regularly, have you had one driver a lot of times? Have you ever thought that the person driving was doing a bad (or good!) job?

Wishing you nothing but smooth travels,

Andrea

(1) behind the wheel - in the driver's seat, behind the steering wheel, the wheel that you turn to make a car go left or right

(2) route - the 'way' or 'path' of a bus or train, or the regular way you use to go somewhere that you go often, like the shops or work
