Hi ,
Does this sound like you?
There is a list of things you need to finish. You're ready to work through them and you make a good start.
But you don't stay focussed - you start doing something else. Something that wasn't on your list. Maybe it's important. Or, maybe you're wasting time and not being productive.
Normally I'm good at staying focussed and working through a set of tasks (1). It doesn't matter if it's preparing for classes, working on craft projects or doing housework. Things usually go well until ... I have to take out my computer.
No, I don't spend hours surfing the internet. I don't even look at social media.
My weakness is solitaire (2) and other card games.
I get out my laptop to print off sheets for classes. Or maybe to type up a new sheet. But instead I play cards. In the past, I would play cards before I did the work I needed to do π.
Because I know my weakness, I have developed some strategies to try and control my behaviour (3).
First, I try and do as much as possible without getting the computer out! I can photocopy a lot of sheets from books and I can write some things by hand - I don't need to use the computer for everything.
But when I really must use it, I do the work that I have to do first. Playing games needs to be a reward, not my first activity.
If I can be strong and put my laptop away as soon as I have finished the task that I have had it out for, that is great! Sometimes it works...
But sometimes the need to 'reward' myself is too strong. Even when it's late in the evening!
Today I was good. I printed a couple of documents, then I played card games for a while. But I turned my computer off early enough to write this (on my tablet - with no games installed) and I won't need to stay up until midnight π.
Am I the only one with a weakness like this? Is there a special activity that you do, even when you really should be doing something else? Do you have any strategies to keep you away from that 'bad' activity? Feel free to share...
Wishing you a good (and productive!) week,
Andrea
(1) tasks - jobs, things you need to do
(2) solitaire - a card game played by one person (part of the Microsoft Solitaire group of games)
(3) behaviour - how someone acts (or 'behaves')
