A couple of extra stories from this year

Season's Greetings ,

As I have already mentioned (1), back in the spring, I bought plants for my balcony. Yes, plants - more than one. The rosemary plant was first, but soon I had a pot of parsley (2) and then one of chives (3), as well.

I had pictures of going out onto the balcony and picking a few leaves of the herbs to cook with.

And that's exactly what happened with the rosemary. I picked leaves and watered the plant, and all is well. I'm looking forward to cooking with fresh rosemary when it starts growing again.

The parsley was a different story. It didn't grow well. Part of the problem was my fault (4). I picked too many of the leaves too quickly. But something else was going on, too - it just didn't grow like it should have.

Sadly, I didn't use the chives at all. After they'd been on my balcony for a few days, I saw little black bugs all over them. I watched and waited. Over the next few weeks, the number of bugs decreased (yay!) but then went back up. So I let the chives die 😥.

The other big adventure for the year (besides growing things) has been to start walking The Way of St James (5).

The day I planned to start walking, it rained - lots of rain, so I decided not to go. But the following Saturday, the sun was shining, so off I went and walked from my place to Frankfurt.

At first, I only did day walks. It was easy to use public transport to get to the beginning of each stage and then home again at the end of the day.

However, by the end of summer, that didn't work anymore. So, during my holiday in October, I walked for five days, ending in Trier. I stayed in little hotels and guest houses along the way.

I've already planned the next stage, from Trier to Metz, for the spring. Hopefully, I can get to Vèzelay in France by the end of 2025.

Well, that's the end of another year! I'll have a break for three weeks - I'll be back again in mid-January.

Until then, I hope you have a Happy Christmas and a relaxing and safe start to the New Year.

'Bye,

Andrea

(1) mentioned - talked about

(2) parsley - a herb that is often added to boiled potatoes

(3) chives - a small cousin of the onion. The leaves and everything are chopped up really finely and sprinkled on a butter Bretzel.

(4) my fault - I caused the problem

(5) The Way of Saint James - how we say 'Jakobsweg' in English
