Geetings ,
When I ask, most people say they don't like the thought of shift work.
Then I think about our modern world and how we expect some groups of people to do shift work. I think you would agree that it's wonderful to know that emergency service workers, like the police and fire departments, have workers who will answer our calls at any moment.
Medical staff are another group. Doctors and nurses work what most of us would call terrible hours to give life-saving care. For them, it's a normal part of the job. It's not even for people they know or who are in their families. They do it for people they don't know, total strangers.
There is shift work in other industries, where maybe it's not needed. A member of my family worked in a food factory. He had to do three shifts: day, afternoon, and night. It was good for the company because they could keep the machines working 24 hours a day. But was it really needed?
Usually, when you think about the tourist industry, you don't think about shift work. However, there are examples. Due to travelling, people might arrive at a hotel super early or late, not in normal 'office hours'. So it's nice if a hotel has a 24-hour check-in service.
In 'the old days,' people worked different shifts so hotel guests could check in at any hour. These days, with modern technology, there are other ways for travellers to check in. But for me, talking to a real person is nicer than pushing some buttons.
That is super important when things don't work properly.
At one of the hotels I've stayed at this year, I had a code to press to enter the hotel, then instructions that told me where the key to my room was. The trouble was, when I typed in the code, the main door didn't open. Thankfully, another guest came along, and he already knew how to turn the handle (1) to let us in.
Have you worked a job with shifts, ? Was it hard? Would you like to work different shifts? Let me know...
Enjoy your week,
Andrea
(1) handle - the 'thing' on a door (or other items) that you use to move it with. You use a door handle to open the door. You use the handle on a mug to pick it up.
