It was a success ... in the end

Greetings ,

I did it! I finally cooked something in the new flat πŸ˜€.

It took a while to get myself organised. First, unpacking all the boxes to find my kitchen things. Then, making sure I had the gear I needed (oops, no quiche dish - I had to buy one).

Finally, I purchased ingredients (1). That was tricky as the recipe (2) is in my head and it's been a l-o-n-g time since I used it!

But last Tuesday (after cleaning my windows, of course!) I set to work.

Being an old-fashioned cook, I make my pastry (3) from scratch (4). It's easy and quick and I can make the quantity I need.

It was a great feeling to get my hands dirty. NOTE - my hands were clean when I started, but I make pastry by using my hands to mix the ingredients together, so they get 'dirty' (maybe 'messy', or 'covered in flour (5) and butter' sounds better πŸ€”).

Looking back, it wasn't the best lot I've ever made. Clearly I'm out of practice.

With the pastry finished and in the dish, I prepared the other ingredients and added them.

The only thing left was the cheese to go on top. I turned the oven on before I started grating (6) it.

When it was all done, I checked the oven.

Oh no! It was still cold.

Why? I had turned the temperature button to 180 Β°C. It should be hot!

Wondering what I was going to do with an uncooked quiche, I took a close look at all the buttons for the oven. Oh, the one with the 'F' wasn't for 'Fahrenheit' - it had strange pictures on it...

Because the kitchen is quite new, the instruction manuals were there when I moved in. So, I found the one for the stove.

Maybe some of you have guessed, but from the manual I learned that the 'F' was for 'Function'. I needed to choose 'oven' there and then set the temperature.

With that information, I heated up the oven and cooked the quiche. And it was delicious πŸ˜‹.

How about your cooking experiences ? Have you had moments when something wouldn't work properly? Did it ruin the food you were preparing, or was everything OK in the end? I'd love to hear your stories πŸ˜€.

Catch ya later,

Andrea

(1) ingredients - the different 'foods' we put into a dish when we cook. For example, for a cake, you use ingredients like eggs, sugar and flour.

(2) recipe - the document with the list of ingredients and instructions for how to cook something (you say it in three parts 're-ci-pe')

(3) pastry - the 'case' made with mainly flour and butter where you put the other ingredients of a quiche (or pie) before you cook it

(4) from scratch - from the very start

(5) flour - the 'powder' from crushed wheat (or other grains). The main ingredient of bread.

(6) to grate - to rub on a 'grater' so that you get lots of small pieces
