Greetings ,
Did you change your clocks on Saturday night?
When I was young, to change the time, you moved the hands of the clock (1). Sometimes you physically touched the hands and moved them. With other clocks and most watches, you turned a knob (2) to move the hands.
Then along came digital clocks and watches. Now you had to press buttons to change the time.
As they built new features into digital watches, it became more complicated to change the time or set it when you first got the watch. And each watch was a bit different.
I like playing with technology. So, often I became the person who could change the time on these new devices. An example was one digital watch Dad had. He couldn't change the time on it, and neither could Mum. So when I visited, I would do it for them.
It's strange, but I have never had a clock in my house. I've never hung a clock on the wall. Even in the kitchen, I haven't had an oven (or microwave oven) with a clock. Well, not until I moved to Obertshausen.
When I moved in, the oven clock wasn't set to the correct time, and the landlord told me he didn't know how to do it. As the kitchen was new-ish and several instruction books were in the flat, I thought it would be easy.
However, there wasn't an instruction book for the oven.
But I played around and soon had the time set correctly.
Last year, I didn't have any problems resetting the time at the beginning and end of Summer Time. But earlier this year, it was different. No matter which button I pressed, I couldn't change the time. For a while, I thought it would stay unchanged the whole summer. Finally, success.
This time, I knew there was a trick. I played for a couple of minutes and quickly remembered what I had to do. So the time is correct and everything's fine for five months.
Do you have trouble setting the time on any of your clocks or watches? Have you ever had a clock or watch that you had problems with when you neede to set the time on it?
Hope your week is free of troublesome clocks and watches!
Andrea
(1) hands (of a clock) - the long, thin pieces that point to the numbers
(2) knob - a small, round thing that you turn to control something mechanical (e.g. the hand of a clock) or electrical
