Don't believe what they say - Germany has dangerous animals!

Dear ,

When people hear that I'm from Australia, they often ask about Australian animals, especially the dangerous ones.

I'm from Tasmania. It's not crocodile territory. The sea water is too cold for really big, dangerous sharks. We have large, scary-looking spiders, but I'm not even sure they bite! Yes, our snakes can bite, but as Tasmania is cooler than other parts of Australia, they don't want to waste their energy (or venom) and are usually quite happy for you to walk past.

I can't remember them when I was younger, but the city I lived in before moving to Germany had wasps. We called them European wasps, because they came from Europe 😉.

They appeared when the weather was hot and dry. I didn't like them! If one came into my flat, I immediately opened lots of windows and guided it out. Sometimes I used insect spray to kill them. They didn't buzz around me, but they scared me more than big, hairy spiders, or snakes.

Then I moved to Germany ... and met European wasps in their natural environment. Here they are far more worrying! They crawl over food in bakeries. Not just one or two of them - heaps of them! They buzz around people and land on them. It freaks me out!!

Last week, someone (Hi HB 😀) mentioned that she had been stung by a wasp. Not good! But she didn't seem too upset. Then a friend calmly killed one in front of me with his bare hands! OK, not quite, he used a serviette. I was amazed.

On Sunday, I walked along the Main. I felt something on my hand and looked - a wasp! Quickly I moved my hand to make it go away. I started walking faster. Then it buzzed me, right in my face. I wanted to run and scream. It was absolutely horrible!!

People say that Germany doesn't have dangerous animals, but I totally disagree. It has wasps! They're everywhere. They can sting you. They can even kill you! (If you're allergic...)

Please share your wasp horror stories - I will definitely empathise. Or tell me what I should do when I meet a wasp.

Stay safe - beware of wasps!

Andrea
