Howdy pard,

Man, oh man, it feels good to see you again —there’s nothin’ like catchin’ up with an old friend. It’s a cool night, so grab a plate and help yourself to them beans cookin’ over the fire. I don’t have much, but what I have is yours.

Gee willikers, have I got a lot to share with you. I’ve got a passel of books, novels, stories and the like – some are historical, some are mysteries, there are even a couple of romances mixed in there. Make sure you read the western I’ve found – it’s great. As ever, none of them cost a cent. I‘ve got a bloody tale about the grisly end met by that dastardly train robber Blackjack Ketchum, as well as a strange tale told by a man hailing from California about strange ‘space men’ visiting from the sky. A headscratcher, that one. I’ve got the lowdown on the railroads that tamed the West, as well as a knee-slapping recipe for cowboy roasted pig that will put a curl in your tail.

Look, your plate is empty and me just gasbaggin’. My apologies, here have some more beans. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘don’t name a cow you plan to eat’.

Train robber loses his head

Blackjack Ketchum started life as a Texas cowhand and ended up as one of the most notorious outlaws in Old West history, terrorizing Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas alongside his brother Sam.

But it wasn’t his crimes that gave him his place in history – it was his botched death sentence for train robbery, which saw his head torn off when the executioner miscalculated the drop on the gallows where Ketchum was hanged. Find out more here:

Did you know?

In 1896 Civil War veteran and journalist H.G. Shaw claimed he saw ‘extraterrestrial aliens’ in the frontier town of Lodi, California. According to Shaw, who wrote about the incident in the local newspaper, the other-worldly beings “were 7 feet tall and very slender with small hands, fingers without nails, and feet twice as long as normal and functioned similar to a monkey’s feet.” Shaw also had a theory about why the aliens arrived in the first place. “Those we beheld were inhabitants of Mars,” Shaw wrote in the Lodi News-Sentinel, “who have been sent to the earth for the purpose of securing one of its inhabitants.”

Lawman to Legend

I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – The Prologue of Eli Stone, by Daniel Griffin.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

Eli Stone, a former lawman turned blacksmith, traverses an unforgiving landscape, haunted by a past he cannot escape and driven by a deep, unspoken need to rectify the wrongs of a world teetering on the edge of moral ambiguity. His solitary quest leads him on the trail of Black Sam Moresby's gang, a band of outlaws scattered by fate but bound by a sinister thread that Eli is determined to sever. As Eli navigates the treacherous terrain, each step brings him closer to confronting not only the physical remnants of the gang but also the shadows of his own soul.

Documentary: The railroad that tamed the West

Settlers, miners and ranchers all shared one problem – it took so darned long to ‘go West’. Spending months on the back of a horse, or riding in a prairie schooner, quickly sorted out the pretenders from those who were serious about grabbing a fresh start and free land.

However, that all changed when the first transcontinental railroad joined the east and west coasts of the United States for the first time. Now anyone with enough money for a ticket could head west and arrive within weeks of setting out, all while enjoying some creature comforts. The transcontinental railroad was a gamechanger.
