Howdy pard,
Holy cow, it’s been too long since we’ve caught up. Quick, grab yourself a blanket, I’ve saved you a place by the fire. Still feelin’ the cold? There, a shot of my ol’ grandpa’s moonshine will fix whatever’s ailin’ you.
Man alive, you couldn’t have popped by at a better time. I’ll need an extra packhorse soon to carry all the free books I’ve found to share with you this month. I’ve got action, adventure and thrills, I’ve got yarns from yesteryear, I’ve even got somethin’ if you want to get your fill of combat and warfare. As ever, they won’t cost a cent. I have some background on that newfangled barbed wire they’re stringin’ up and down the prairies, and some inside gossip on why that whiskey we tried last month tasted so bad. I’ve got the lowdown on General Custer and his showdown at the Little Bighorn, as well as a recipe for cowboy-inspired fried apple pie that will leave you thinkin’ you’re back in your mama’s kitchen.
Just listen to me prattle on and all this moonshine to sip. Here, have another. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘a wink’s as good as a nod to a blind mule’.

Barbed Wire: the ‘Devil’s Rope’
The invention of barbed wire changed the Old West forever. Like the introduction of the six-shooter, the telegraph, the windmill, and the locomotive, barbed wire brought civilization and ‘fancy society living’ further west than it had ever been before and tamed ever more tracts of wilderness.
However barbed wire was not welcomed as warmly as revolvers or locomotives. Cattle herders found less space to graze their cattle, as the wire cut off access to public land. In addition, Native American tribes no longer had the freedom to roam the wide unsettled expanses of the West unimpeded. They soon referred to barbed wire fencing the ‘Devil’s Rope’. Did you know?
Whiskey may have been the liquor of choice, but that didn’t mean it tasted good. Many was the tenderfoot who strutted through a saloon's doors, ordered a shot of the bartender's finest, and then proceed to spit it out all over the floor. It tasted like gasoline, but the bottle says it was aged 10 years and comes from Kentucky. What gives? Some of the nicknames given to Wild West whiskey were a clue. ‘Strychnine, ‘mountain howitzer’, ‘tangle leg’ and ‘coffin varnish’ were among the more obvious clues, but it wasn't just that the names were bad. So, too, were the ingredients. The aptly named Ol' Snakehead, for example, was made with real rattlesnake heads, as well as flavoring like tobacco, blackstrap molasses, and river water. Other added ingredient, such as sulfuric acid, were downright dangerous.

Frontier Outlaws
I’m proud to recommend a great western adventure that came across my desk – Frontier Outlaws, by Michael Cardwell.
Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):
Eight months after the showdown that nearly cost him his life, Game Warden Danny Coogan faces a new threat. It starts with a dead steer, which happens to be near the body of a dead rancher. With the flavor of a down-home yarn and the intensity of a high adventure, Frontier Outlaws offers Craig Johnson and CJ Box fans a thrilling ride that delivers a bronco-busting punch. If you like mysteries and crime stories with resilient heroes, slam-bang action, and nail-biting suspense spiked with a splash of wilderness humor, you’ll love this second book in the Coogan Mystery series.

The Myths of Little Bighorn
The story of Custer's Last Stand - a tiny band of brave American cavalrymen holding out against bow-and-arrow and tomahawk-wielding Native American warriors - is perhaps the most potent symbol of the legend of the American Frontier.
The site of Little Bighorn has been researched like no other American battlefield. Using the results of this scientific research, this documentary peels away the myths about Little Bighorn, revealing that there was no last stand, just as there were, in fact, few bows, arrows or tomahawks.
