Howdy pard,

Pull up a stool and take a load off – welcome!

You've picked the perfect time to ride on in. I’ve found a whole pile of free books (help yourself as much as you like) as well as some real interesting gossip about those new Stetson hats I’ve seen lately. I’ve heard a rib-crackin’ story about a lady who robbed her very first stagecoach, and I’ve found a recipe for smoked brisket that promises to be better than almost anything you’ve ever tasted!

No, no, put your money away, it’s my turn to buy you a drink. Bartender, another round, pronto! As my grandpa used to say, “kickin’ never gets you nowhere unless you’re a mule”.

The Captain’s Story

Here’s something special. I’m proud to recommend this great tale by Ray J Cowling called A Captain’s Tale. Here’s the lowdown (but don’t worry – no spoilers):

His name: Commander Mike Mansfield. His ship: HMS Devonport. His mission: To win back The Falkland Islands.

Commander Mansfield is the youngest ever Captain in the Royal Navy. His first command is the destroyer, HMS Devonport. Suddenly his ship is sent to the South Atlantic as part of a British Task Force, to win back the Falkland Islands from an invading army from Argentina.

The weight of responsibility rests heavily on Mansfield’s shoulders. Does he have what it takes to overcome the doubts and fears of the two hundred and fifty-two officers and men under his command?

Cowboy hats – an Old West icon

The image of the classic cowboy is defined more by his headwear than any other possession. Recognized around the world as the defining image of the Old West, the bond between cowboys and their hats goes back a long way.

The design of the cowboy hat itself had many influences, including Mexican hats such as the sombrero, the various wide-brim designs worn by farmers and stockmen ‘back East’, as well as the designs used by the United States Cavalry.

Today the cowboy hat has become as much a part of fashion as it is function.

Worn by cowboys, cowgirls, rodeo athletes, musicians and movie stars alike, the cowboy hat is a truly traditional item of the West Find out more about the cowboy hat here:

Did you know?

Canadian Pearl Hart was always more interested in adventuring than school. At age 17, she eloped with gambler Fredrick Hart. When Hart was abusive to her, she up and moved to Arizona, where she met and married Joe Boot. Unsuccessful at mining, in 1899, Pearl and Boot robbed a stagecoach instead. Unfortunately for them they got lost in the desert and were caught. Pearl became the second woman to rob a stagecoach and the first not to be killed doing so. She was pardoned after 18 months due to the lack of accommodation in the prisons for women.

Cowboy brisket heaven

There are three things by which judge a good brisket; tenderness, smoky flavor, and whether it is cowboy-approved. Well, that last one may not exactly be true (whoever heard of a cowboy refusing a brisket), but cowboy cook Ken Rollins shows you how to do brisket right, from start to finish.

Whether this is your first brisket, or you’re a life-long veteran, I bet Ken will show you something you didn’t already know – enjoy!

One last thing

Last month I recommended a free novella about courage, honor and consequences in the world of the Vikings: The Silver Goblet, by Ole Åsli and Tony Bakkejord.

However there was a problem with the link I was sent to download the book – the danged internet tubes just plain didn’t work. Anyway, I got back in touch with the author and he sent through a new link that he swears will work.
