January, '25

Howdy pard,

Ooh boy, that new year sure kicks in quick, doesn’t it? I barely catch my breath from Christmas, and they go and throw me into a whole new year, starting from scratch. Luckily, this whisky here is good no matter what time of year it is. Here, pull up a stool and share a glass with me.

There’s no better way to greet January than with a new book, and I’ve brought lots to choose from. Grab yourself a free novel or two, or help yourself to huge discounts on a whole range of page turners. I’ll you all about the history and origins of those shifty ‘snake oil salesmen’, as well as the richest city in the world – in Wyoming, believe it or not. I’ve got a documentary all about what makes Tombstone, Arizona, so special, and a recipe for One Pot Cowboy Casserole.

Now, let me top up your glass there. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘There’s no place ’round the campfire for a quitter’s blanket’.

Snake oil salesmen

‘Snake oil’. Those two seemingly innocent words bring to mind seedy profiteers, fake cures, fraudulent hucksters, fraudulent goods, frauds, quacks, traveling salesmen with dubious morals, charlatans, and a host of other suspicious characters.

‘Snake oil salesman’ was almost a cottage industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with shady characters and confidence tricksters hawking their questionable goods across not just the West but the entire United States. But how did ‘snake oil’ become one of the most recognizable aspects of Old West history? Find out more here: https://nickbrumbywesterns.com/snake-oil-salesmen/

‘Non-stop cowboy action’

Thank you to everyone who has picked themselves up a copy of Redding’s Fandango – the reviews have been great:

“The story starts fast and runs hard. Six-shooters, Winchesters and Bowie knives are the tools of the trade and they get well used. If Sol didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. This story brings the non-stop cowboy action all the way to the end.”

The book is also now available on major ebook retailers - or check out the extra special edition containing exclusive content and a story epilogue not available from other retailers, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any device.
