Beans, books and whiskey make for a happy cowboy

Howdy pard,
I’ve got a golden rule – I treat my news, gossip, and updates like I treat my whisky.
That’s why I keep the good stuff for myself and share what’s lef--- no, hang on, I’ve got that wrong. I drink the rotgut and hide anything worth keep--- nope, still not right.
Darn it, just let me brush the dust from my boots and I’ll meet you at the saloon. Oh heck, the next drink’s on me... the good stuff, don’t worry.

Smoke, Fire and Butterflies
I’m pleased to recommend a great Civil War adventure I read recently – Smoke, Fire and Butterflies, by Ricky Dean Wyrick.
Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):
Can a cold-hearted Confederate be a war hero? What does it take to change a man’s heart?
Tobias Thorne joined the Civil War for all the wrong reasons. He was a slave owner, a tobacco farmer, a devoted father, and a loving husband. A citizen from South Carolina, but he was bitter and calloused; stubborn and racist, but honest, brave, and strong.
Daniel, Tobias’ oldest son, respected his Pa, but they often didn’t see eye to eye. The secret they shared shaped a road to redemption, but such a road can be a difficult and painful one at best. The story follows Tobias into the battle of Fredericksburg, where he learns the secret that saves Tobias from himself.

What a Wild West duel really looked like
I waste far too much time watching Youtube videos, but occasionally I find a nugget of gold hidden in the trash which is worth sharing.
We all love a classic cowboy showdown… sweat running down each man’s face, hands quivering over holsters, itching to pull the trigger, but not wanting to be the first to draw their pistol.
I found a really interesting piece looking at how common the “classic” quick-draw duel really was. It also touches on the rates of violence in Old West frontier towns and looks at what kinds of day-to-day violence most closely mirrored the Wild West gunfights most commonly seen in films and books.

Did you know?
Whiskey was the social lubricant of choice in towns, saloons, mines and around campfires across the Old West. It’s no surprise that it was given more names than a dog had ticks. Old West slang terms for whiskey included: bottled courage, bug juice, coffin varnish, fire water, gut warmer, joy juice, neck oil, nose paint, tarantula juice, tonsil varnish, and tornado juice.

Beans means a happy cowboy
When you consider the classic Old West dish, you can’t go past a good plate of beans! They taste good, they are filling, they are cheap, they don’t spoil, and they go with anything.
