Howdy pard,

Well I’ll be – it can’t have been that long since we last spoke! It’s great to see you. Sit yourself down beside the campfire and grab a cup. The coffee ain’t much, but it’s hot, and strong enough to stand a spoon in it.

Grab me over that saddlebag, will you? I’ve found a pile of novels and stories that seem right up your alley – help yourself to as many as you like. I also heard some good gossip about how the Marshals, Sheriffs and other lawmen work together in these parts – you never can be too careful. I hear sharpshooter Annie Oakley is in town as well – she’s better with a shooting iron than any three sheriffs. Oh, and did you her the one about the gent in North Carolina who used a 17 pound gold nugget as a doorstop? Stick around, you’ll love this one.

17 pound gold nugget, huh? Quick, hand me that bottle of rotgut – I’ll drink to that. As my grandpa used to say, “better to be a ‘has been’ than a ‘never-was’”.

Marshals, Sheriffs and Old West lawmen

The Old West had a reputation for being a lawless place and time. With all the gun-toting, cattle rustling, train-robbing, and card-hustling going on, at times it must have seemed like there were no laws and no one upholding the peace.

However, this was not the case. Old West society had various types of lawmen with different levels of authority. Who actually upheld the law and who didn’t? Find out more about Old West lawmen right here:

Did you know?

Annie Oakley was an expert markswoman who became the first female superstar in what was traditionally a male profession. In 1875, she entered a shooting match with expert marksman Frank Butler, where to everybody’s astonishment, she beat him. She eventually married him, and in 1887, joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show where she became famous. She performed with the show for the next the next 17 years and amazed audiences with her ability to split cards on the edges, shoot the corks off of bottles, and put out candles with a shotgun.

Cowboy snickerdoodles

Snckerdoodles. Snickdoodles. Just the very thought makes me shout a big yahoo! Most folk think that they’re made from flour, fat, sugar, baking soda, salt, and rolled in cinnamon sugar. However, as my grandpa used to say, they forget the secret ingredient – love.

Cowboy chef Ken Rollins forgets nothing. Ken has himself one of the best snickerdoodle recipes you’re ever likely to taste. Big, chewy, just the right size to fit in your shirt pocket, and cooked in a dutch oven. Hot diggerty darn!

Saddle up with Ken and learn how to cowboy snickerdoodle from a master.

Third time lucky

When young Conrad Reed found a large yellow rock in his father’s field in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, in 1799, he had no idea what it was. Neither did his father, John Reed. The family reportedly used it as a doorstop for several years, until a visiting jeweler recognized it as a 17-pound gold nugget. The rush was on. Eventually, Congress built the Charlotte Mint to cope with the sheer volume of gold dug up in North Carolina. In 1828 gold was discovered in Georgia, leading to the nation’s second gold rush. Finally, in 1848, James Marshall struck it rich at Sutter’s Mill in California, and thousands of Forty-Niners moved west to seek their fortunes.
