Howdy pard,

Dang, seein’ you sure is a sight for sore eyes. Grab yourself a plate, help yourself to the pork and beans, and let me grab you a cup of joe.

Have I got somethin’ for you! I’ve tracked down a whole saddlebag of free westerns this month- feel free to help yourself. I’ll tell you all about the lariat (the cowboy’s best friend) and I’ll share what I’ve heard about those new ‘red-light’ districts from over Kansas way. I’ve got a tale to tell you about the mystery of the Horse Creek Girl, and a recipe for cowboy dumplings that will make your toes curl.

Finished your coffee? Here, have a shot of whisky to keep you warm. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘Polishin' your pants on saddle leather don’t make you a rider’.

Old West Lariats

The lariat is like a cowboy’s Swiss army knife – a seemingly simple tool with a million different uses. No self-respecting cowboy would be caught out on the range without a strong rope near to hand.

A lasso or lariat (also called reata and la reata in Mexico) is a loop of rope designed as a restraint to be thrown around a target and tightened when pulled. Technically the correct term for the rope itself is lariat, and the word lasso is referred to how it is used. Cowboys themselves aren’t so fussy – they call it a lasso or a lariat, or sometimes just simply a rope! Find out more here:

‘Starts fast and runs hard’

Thank you to everyone who has picked themselves up a copy of Redding’s Fandango – the reviews have been great:

“The story starts fast and runs hard. Six-shooters, Winchesters and Bowie knives are the tools of the trade and they get well used. If Sol didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. This story brings the non-stop cowboy action all the way to the end.”

The book is also now available on major ebook retailers - or check out the extra special edition containing exclusive content and a story epilogue not available from other retailers, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any device. You can find it here:

Did you know?

The term “red light district” came from the Red Light Bordello in Dodge City, Kansas. The front door of the building was made of red glass and produced a red glow to the outside world when lit at night. The name carried over to refer to the town’s brothel district.

Frontier Marshal: A Coogan Mystery

I’m proud to recommend some great sci-fi that came across my desk – Frontier Marshal: A Coogan Mystery, by Michael Cardwell.

Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):

"U. S. Marshall Danny Coogan returns to his roots in Montana to settle into the sleepy town of Darwin with his pregnant wife. But as Danny races into town ahead of an early blizzard, the storms of his past threaten his future. Not only has the ambitions of the Ghost Buffalo Society set some of the local Indians on a path toward insurrection, but Danny’s best friend, Edmund Goodrunner, working undercover for the Tribal Council, has gone missing.

Soon, gunfire erupts in the town of Brokenrope on the Rez. A cop is shot, as is Danny’s wife, an innocent bystander. Danny knows what he needs to do as a lawman: discover the motives for these shootings, find Edmund, and stop the carnage. But as a man and a husband, he craves vengeance on the culprit who shot his wife."

Documentary: The Mystery of the Horse Creek Girl

Fifty years after the historical remains of a Native American woman (known thereafter as ‘Horse Creek Girl’) were discovered, a seemingly simple tribal identification project blossomed into a complex, multi-discipline study. As a result, we now have an idea of how the Horse Creek Girl may have lived and died, and we get a different look at early reservation history.
