Howdy pard,
Welcome back – looks like you’ve been busy as a beaver getting back into the swing of things after the festive season!
Don’t worry, I’ve got just the thing for you - I’ve found some great free page-turners to help you keep those cold, cold nights at bay, a fun video looking back at the age of the stagecoach in the Old West, and a recipe for cowboy-style omelets that will put the spring in your step.
Come inside, get warm by the fire, and let the longhorns look after themselves for just a little while!
The Gaslight Gunslinger
I’m proud to recommend a great western I read recently – The Gaslight Gunslinger, by Sugar Lee Ryder.
Here’s the story (spoiler-free!):
1878: San Francisco’s changed from a Gold-Rush era boomtown into a bustling city full of money, bawdy houses, and a loose sense of the law.
Enter Matthew Slade, formerly the Pinkerton Detective Agency’s best gun-hand, investigator, and tracker. No sooner does he arrive at San Francisco’s stockyard than he rescues Mai Lee, a little Chinese girl, from a pair of thugs intent on kidnapping her.
Can a gunslinger used to the open plains and prairies of the West deal with the criminal underworld of a crowded metropolis? Even with the help of a sea-captain and a pair of bawdy-house madams, the odds are long at best!

Did you know?
Outlaw Elmer McCurdy wasn’t very lucky in life, or in death. He robbed a train in 1911 but got away with only $46. When the law eventually caught up and shot him down, his corpse remained unclaimed, and was sold to a traveling carnival as a sideshow attraction. From there, McCurdy’s remains made the rounds of wax museums and haunted houses before being discovered 66 years later in an amusement park in Long Beach. Amazingly his ultimate fate was inadvertently discovered during the filming of an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man!
Stagecoach fever
Here’s a lovely little piece of western history I ran across recently – a nice video article about the history and significance of stagecoaches in the Wild West!
The video discusses how stagecoaches were made, their importance in moving people from place to place, how stagecoach companies grew to become some of the biggest and most important organisations in the United States.
Of course, being about the old West, there's also a bunch of people reenacting the old times and generally having a lot of fun.
