Howdy pard,

I’m right pleased for this chance to catch up. I’ve got more gossip than a chuckwagon cook to share – grab yourself a drink and bunker down.

I’m glad you enjoy your readin’ – I’ve got more free books to choose from than beeves on a cattle drive. I’ve got all the scuttlebutt about John Wesley Hardin, the most ruthless cold-eyed killer ever to walk the Frontier, information about the cost of living in the goldfields, as well as one of them moving-picture shows about the Colt Peacemaker six-shooter. I’ll tell you all about Squirrel-tooth Alice, and how to make sloppy joes that will make cowboys stand and salute.

Oh, and I’m also giving you a world-first exclusive – the first snippet of the next Sheriff Sol Redding western – yes, the first draft is finished. This story will be a dandy, if you ask me.

Listen to me talk – I’m a terrible host. Here, have another drink – life is too short. As my ol’ grandpa used to say, ‘Timin’ has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance’.

Exclusive sneak peek at my next 'Sixgun Drifter' western

I’m proud to announce that I’ve finished the first draft of my next western, the second in the ‘Sheriff Sol Redding’ series. It’s a big rollicking adventure with lots of action, double crosses, bad hombres and gun play – and as my treasured newsletter family I’m going to give you all an exclusive first look as my way of saying thank you. This excerpt is from the first draft of the book as it stands today - it may change a little (or a lot!) by the time I publish. Depending on how quickly I can edit, it should be out soon. I just couldn’t wait to give you a taste of what's coming...

The scene: Sol and his offsider Jasper (and Jasper's hound Gizzard) are exploring the depths of a long-abandoned death-trap silver mine when things suddenly go from bad to worse...

John Wesley Hardin

He gunned down lawmen, former slaves, Federal troops, cowboys, Mexican herders and drunken gamblers. Yet for all his killings, enemies and showdowns, John Wesley Hardin’s most dangerous foe was himself.

Hardin was a cattle hand, a drifter, a gambler, and a lawyer. However, he is best known as a gunfighter who spent his life gunslinging, dueling, gambling, and drinking, and still found the time to kill dozens of people. How many? Anything from 27 (confirmed) to 40-something (according to Hardin himself). However, nobody really knows quite how many,

‘Starts fast and runs hard’

Thank you to everyone who has picked themselves up a copy of Redding’s Fandango – the reviews have been great:

“The story starts fast and runs hard. Six-shooters, Winchesters and Bowie knives are the tools of the trade and they get well used. If Sol didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all. This story brings the non-stop cowboy action all the way to the end.”

The book is also now available on major ebook retailers - or check out the extra special edition containing exclusive content and a story epilogue not available from other retailers, delivered by Bookfunnel, and readable on any device.

Did you know?

It was more expensive to live in a gold-rush town in 1851 than it is to live in Silicon Valley in 2025, taking inflation into account! If you moved to a Californian mining town in to strike your fortune, you’d more likely end up penniless. A single egg could cost today’s equivalent of $105; a pound of butter would cost about $700 today, while shovels sold for $1,259 each in 2025 dollars. Each! Bear in mind that most miners only found $10 to $15 in gold each day…

Documentary: The Evolution of the Colt Single Action Army revolver

It was carried by Custer’s men at Little Big Horn, was favored by generations of outlaws and lawmen alike, is Arizona’s official firearm, and is still being produced more than 150 years after its introduction. It’s fair to say that no gun in the history of the Old West has left a mark as deep as the Colt Single Action Army revolver. Find out more about this legendary firearm in this great documentary:

Did you know?

Squirrel Tooth Alice was a dance hall girl in Dodge City and other Wild West towns in the 1870s, later becoming a famous brothel madam in Sweetwater, Texas. Her real name was Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Haley, and she did have a small gap in her front teeth, but that’s not how she got her nickname. She was fond of the prairie dogs that infested the plains of Kansas. She kept some as pets and led them around town on a leash. One night a drunk saw her walking one of her pets, mistook it for a squirrel and named her Squirrel Tooth Alice. The name stuck.

Wild West Sloppy Joes

Wild West Sloppy Joes are a bunkhouse favorite - a good meal that everyone knows and loves. Sloppy Joes always fill up cowboys after a long day of work and it is the most requested sandwich we get on ranches. They are an easy meal to cook, and you can make it as easy or as hard as you want to. Cowboy chef Kent Rollins will take you through cooking this wild west delicacy:
