Howdy pard,

It’s time to take a break, just for a moment. Come tell me about your day and let me share a few things of my own.

Today I come bearing free books! Whether you like pulp fiction, historical fiction or affairs of the heart, you’re going to be happy. Just scroll down and take your pick of any of the free books I’ve found for you this month. I also look at what happened on the legendary cattle drives that ran from Texas up to Kansas and all points east, as well as why the town of Delmar, Nevada gained the reputation as a ‘Widowmaker’. There’s also video tips on campfire cooking for beginners.

One more thing – make sure you check out the news I bring about a great new ebook delivery option. It’s a whole new ball game – it works with every e-reader – one click and you’re done. And it is absolutely free. Trust me, check it out.

Anyway, enough of that fliberty-gibber. As my grandpa used to say, never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction.

Cowboys and cattle drives

Cattle, specifically longhorns, were the heartbeat of the American cowboy legend. From the end of the Civil War until 1890, some 27 million cattle were driven from Texas to railheads in Kansas, for shipment to stockyards in Louisiana and points east. New railroads were built to move them, new towns were founded to feed and entertain the tired stock riders after spending months in the saddle.

However, the longhorns didn’t find their way north on their own. Cattle drives required a team of cowboys, each with a specific and specialized job to play in keeping those cattle headed forward.

Find out more about real cowboys and the roles they played in feeding a hungry nation, in this story on my revamped website: https://nickbrumbywesterns.com/cowboys-and-cattle-drives/

Bookfunnel’s new book app – no fuss, works every time

Folks, I use ‘Bookfunnel’ to delivery my books to your e-readers because it provides the best possible experience. Well guess what – it just got even better.

Bookfunnel now has an excellent free app which makes it even easier to get your books delivered. Available on iOS and Android, it is the fastest, most-reliable way to get a book to Kindle, NOOK, Kobo, Apple Books, or Play Books, hands down.

With the BookFunnel app, you just tap a code on your landing page, and you send the file to your e-reader seconds later. No extra steps, no forwarding emails, no rejection messages, no passwords. That’s it.

Oh, that’s not all. The app also has a built-in cloud ebook reader – it means you don’t even need to send it to your Kindle (or whatever) – you can instantly start reading right there and then. It also remembers everything you ever downloaded using Bookfunnel and puts it in a library for later. Oh, did I mention you can also listen to your audiobooks through the same app? I can’t recommend it enough.

I don’t have a link to share for this one – you’ll find it by searching for ‘bookfunnel’ in your phone/tablet/computer’s app store and downloading it. You won’t regret it.

Did you know?

Delmar, Nevada became a Wild West town known for the dangerous conditions of its mines. In 1889, gold was discovered in nearby Monkey Wrench Gulch, and within a few years, Delmar grew to a population of 1,500 with a hospital, a school, and multiple saloons. In 1893, a mill was built to refine the gold, and it exposed the miners and the townspeople to silicon dust which, when breathed in, could damage the lungs and cause death. At one point, there were as many as 400 widows living in Delmar, which gave it its reputation as the Widowmaker. The mill was torn down in 1909, and by 1934, all the residents had moved away, and the town was abandoned.

History of the heart

When it comes to historical fiction, the stories we remember the most are those that capture our imaginations, our dreams, and our hearts. The nearly 20 free novels in this giveaway will grab hold of all three and not let go until you’ve read the last word.

They all have something in common – they are waiting for you right now and they won’t cost you a cent. Pick one, pick ten, pick them all – it’s up to you.

Here’s a couple of titles to whet your interest:

  •  Miserable in Montana, by Cheryl Wright
  • Genteel Secrets, by S.R, Mallory
  • The Nightmare Kingdom, by Rob Bauer
  • Captured by the Earl, by Melanie Rose Clarke

It’s one thing to have a mouth-watering cowboy campfire recipe, but you haven’t cooked over an open fire before it can be a bit overwhelming.

That’s why this video is so great – it’s to show beginners how to cook over a campfire. Country Kitchen's Tim Farmer discusses the basics of getting your fire started, maintaining temperature, tools needed and how to heat a basic dutch oven. He even shows you two beginner recipes that you won't want to miss - 'Sausage and Cabbage', and 'Mexicali Pork Chops'.
