Howdy pard,
It’s great to see you again. Pull up a stool and pour yourself a drink – I don’t have much but what I do have is yours!
Today I’ve found some books that take you back in time, enough novels to keep you reading until the end of time (and which won’t cost you a cent), and a great video interview with a man who witnessed everything the Wild West had to offer - and then took photos of it all.
I've also found some timely cooking tips for using a cast-iron Dutch Oven which will have you eating under the stars just like the cowboys and outlaws on the range.
Come inside, shake off that snow, and get warm – Spring is just around the corner!
Escape into History
Time travel can sometimes be hard to get your head around. Yet a quick trip into the past, via the pages of a good book, is often the best way to put your troubles behind you .
If you’re looking for a good way to spend a couple of hours (or a couple of days) living in the past, then listen up! I’ve found a stack of free (and excellent) novels for you to try, all set in the past, and all ready to download right now.
There are more than 70 novels offering different ways to ‘escape into history’, including romantic journeys of discovery, historical conundrums, medieval mysteries, wild west adventures and even some time travel escapades! These books won’t disappoint.
Just be aware, some of the historical romances get a little steamy, so make sure you go in with your eyes open. I’d for ol’ Ma Barker to open the wrong book and get more than she bargained for!
They all have something in common – they will all take you back in time, and they won’t cost you a cent. Pick one, pick ten, pick them all – it’s up to you.
Here’s a couple of titles to whet your interest:
- A Viking’s Curse, by Avani Clare
- Charming Doctor Forrester, by Jemma Frost
- Richter’s War: The Case of Lady Crow, by Daniel P. Douglas
- Of Gold and Blood, by Jenny Wheeler

Dutch Oven cooking tips
Stews, bread, soups… there’s nothing like cooking under the stars. Cowboys, settlers and outlaws would have gone much hungrier much more often if it wasn’t for the humble Dutch Oven.
However, cooking with cast iron is not as easy as it seems – it can take patience and a steady hand to get it right.
With camping season coming, it's the perfect time for outdoor cooking. Genuine cowboy cooking legend Kent Rollins has taken the opportunity to share some easy tips to get you cooking in a Dutch oven and enjoying cast iron.
Watch Kent pass on some of his best cast iron cooking secrets and shortcuts in this excellent video he has published on that youtube thingamebob: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmWBobMiHQY

Did you know?
In 1855, the federal government used funds to buy and ship camels from Egypt to the United States. They thought that these 'ships of the desert' would do better in the heat than horses would, making missions and exploration easier. When the Civil War broke out several years later, many camels escaped and bred, leaving hundreds of feral camels roaming the wilds of Texas today.

I photographed the Wild West
The Wild West was one of the first eras of history to be widely documented in word and by photograph. We know the frontier was full of swaggering cowboys, sly outlaws, ruthless cattle barons and determined settlers because we can see the black and white photographs for ourselves.
All those people are long gone, but amazingly, their actual words and memories live on.
I’ve found a video of William Henry Jackson, an American photographer, Civil War veteran, painter, and an explorer famous for his images of the American West.
In this interview, recorded in 1941, Mr. Jackson tells of his experiences about roaming the wild west frontier as he performed his job as a photographer and surveyor.
It’s an amazing recollection of Wild West memories and stories - enjoy!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2ab5nv4Suc
